The client brief was to create an interior with an open, industrial feel while integrating warmth through the layering of colours and textures that reflect the West Coast. In order to support the homeowner’s focus on healthy living, the consultant team blurred the lines between inside and outside and integrated moments of delight.

The front door hints at what is inside the home, connecting to the interior colour scheme. Each closed room is treated as a destination by the infusion of bold colours in the bathrooms, bedrooms and den. The custom blue perforated steel staircase is a playful element that allows light to filter through from the top level to the basement, creating shadow play on the surfaces.

Millwork was intentionally designed with open shelving to accommodate the homeowner’s request for ease of visual and physical access to his belongings. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves envelop the library loft, a sunny spot perfect for Sunday afternoon reading and napping. Steel, concrete, and brick-like clay tile surfaces are softened by timber, oak, and the client's extensive plant collection. Dappled sunlight bathes the entire material palette in warmth.

The double-height living room, kitchen and dining room required a layered approach to lighting that maintains intimacy in the spaces below. The staircase wall sconces double as magnet boards on which the homeowner can leave daily reminders. A custom blackened steel fireplace serves as a statement piece that anchors the centre of the home amongst the free-flowing indoor-outdoor space.

The connection to the exterior, thoughtful design details and durable materials in this home will stand the test of time and trends. This house was designed to age gracefully.
